Do You Need an Electrical Service Change?

A full panel, flickering lights, storm damage, or an outdated electrical system may have you wondering if it’s time for a service change. In some cases, the solution may be simpler. Here are some common issues and what they could mean.

A full electrical panel doesn’t always mean you need a completely new service. In some cases, a larger panel may be all you need, which can help save you money.

Sun exposure can dry out and crack the wire jacket over time, allowing water to enter the meter or panel. Left unaddressed, this moisture can eventually cause rust and damage.

Flickering lights may be caused by an aging or moisture-damaged meter base, main, or circuit breaker. A loose wire or defective circuit breaker could also be the source of the problem.

Storms can damage the electrical service entering your home, including ripping the service wire or meter away from the house.

Water penetration can cause moisture and rust inside the electrical panel. When addressed early enough, the resulting damage may be minor.

Adding square footage or equipment that creates additional electrical demand may require an increase in the amperage of your electrical service.

A service change may not solve this problem. Individual circuits may be overloaded and need to be divided to properly handle the electrical demand.

For a structure with two or more tenants, code requires an owner’s panel to supply power to common circuits.
